Within Poetry
I saw this on a trip to a museum (can’t remember where):
Within poetry, there is painting
Within painting, there is poetry

NYT Creativity: Poetry With Constraints
The New York Times is running a five-day Creativity Challenge, with prompts each day and today it was about using constraints for poems, with only a small set of words to choose from.

Poetry: Telesto
This poem comes from a prompt via DS106 Daily Create.
I am Telesto,
a tiny moon in motion,
a forgotten daughter
of the Greek god, Oceanus,
an orbital body
of stories and myth –
forget me at your peril,
for I am proof that
even the smallest of us
can become our own
centers of
gravity

In The News: Baseball Poetry
The local newspaper did a piece about the poem I wrote for a friend, with a baseball theme, for the National Baseball Poetry Festival. The article is behind a paywall, so you only get the front of it here.

Poem: Sijo
A palm-sized pencil,
accidentally kicked by a kid,
rolls its way to my foot,
an invitation to writing;
the graphite snaps before
I scribble out this poem
This Sijo-style poem is via the prompt at DS106 Daily Create. I don’t think I quite understood the syllable and grouping concepts, but hey, I found a poem.

Poem: Baseball Under Ground
The story behind this poem is that my wife was working on a flower bed under the front windows, and deep down, she found an old baseball. No doubt, one of my boys had buried it at some point in baseball childhood. The poems comes from there. – Kevin
An old baseball, sunk
into soil, never grows
roots, only smudge
and grime, remnants
of past time
Still, some kid here tried;
Small fingers, folded
on a stitched face
of white thread
and knitted lace,
dug down into the earth
with barely a trace
of which game the ball
even belonged to –
a home run hit
to cheering mates
or a hesitant swing,
a loss that grates –
Some summer days
race forward like a batter
running base – you can bury
the lede, if you truly believe
in surfacing the story —
Other days slink, slow,
a seed for song,
a game of imagination
most of us still play
minutes before the sun
fades away

Visualization App: Constellation Poems
I created this little visualization app via Claude AI that turns any small poem into a constellation. I used it for a morning poem written with a one-word prompt of “night.” The use of the Constellation Visualization seemed appropriate.
Give it a try, if you want.
