We thought it was surprise snow,
in June, in middle America,
because we were young
and didn’t know any better,
the two of us, barely still boys,
in that old Buick, barreling back
to New England, from Madison,
the mission to Wisconsin
to woo her back, a failed one,
but still, a college break adventure,
and it was a swarm of bugs, not flakes,
a night cloud of them knocking glass
and waking us up so fully with surprise
we finally laughed at it all, and that’s
what we still remember the most:
the storm of insects clouding our view
as we drove east, back towards home

Poem: Even Broken Strings

Even Broken Strings

This morning is the first of the July poetry prompts via Open Write, and the theme of the prompt was about threads, and fabric, and broken things. My mind drifted to music, as if it often does for these prompts, and I was remembering an old guitar I had where my I so often played so hard, I would regularly break strings, and bloody my fingers, and sometimes, just keep playing. Those memories were the threads of this poem.

Peace (in broken things),

A Poem Takes Shape(s)

This morning, for the DS106 Daily Create, the prompt was to write a handwritten poem. Which I did.

Inked Words

And then I read Sarah’s poem (via Mastodon) that begins “Is this a poem?” and I thought about a remix/response by taking the word “shape” (which is not in her poem but which bubbled up for me) and making it into shapes (via font design) as a play on what poems might look like — the shapes they might take.

Peace (and play),
Kevin

Nova Scotia: Curated Daily Poems

Sunset (Liverpool, Nova Scotia)

My wife and I, and our dog, took the long ride to the eastern edge of Nova Scotia (it was beautiful!) and each day, I wrote poems. This is a curated collection of poems, representing each day we were away. I tried to use our natural surroundings and my observations to inspire these small poems — which is one way for me to remember our explorations and journey.
