Poetry: They Are From There

From There

There was an unusual prompt for the DS106 Daily Create this morning, in which we were asked to find a poem in another language and translate it without looking at the official translation. I wanted to find some Arabic poetry, because the writing itself is always so interesting. I settled on a poem by Mahmoud Darwish, and only saw the title translated: I Am From There.

I changed it to They Are From There and didn’t really follow the rules of translation. My poem interpretation is more inspired by the calligraphy of the poem and the title, and also, to be honest, current events. (This is is a famous Palestinian poet, after all.)

Peace (and poems),
Kevin

Poetry: Hunter’s Moon

Hunter's Moon

There are so many kinds of full moons, it’s interesting to discover ones you didn’t know about. I didn’t know about Hunter’s Moon, but I soon found a lot to learn about it, including its connection to Indigenous Tribes gathering in October for collective hunts.

Peace (and discovery),

Poem: Not A Single Leaf

I wrote this during some free-write time in my classroom, writing alongside my students.

No single leaf falls
without a sound –
even if no one’s
around to listen –
the ground hears it,
the critters, too

Some days, the forest music
shimmers uncertain:

like buds in Spring
the ice of Winter
the crunch of Autumn
the breeze of Summer

So we meander in,
quiet, and wander along,
with ears open, hoping
for song

Peace (in seasons),
Kevin
