Music Track: Something About This House

This music track is the latest in a series of singles I am slowly releasing as I record and produce them at my home. This song — Something About This House — started with a lovely visit from a person who grew up in the house where we now live. We’ve become friendly with her, and as she shares stories of the house, it often feels like the ghosts of past people are listening in.

I am not completely satisfied with the vocals on this one but I got frustrated and stopped trying to redo them. It’s an odd key for me, and quirky chordal endings at times.

Peace (maybe you’re a ghost),
Kevin

Music: Wander With Grace

I’ve been slowly recording some new songs and putting them out as singles via Bandcamp as opposed to gathering them together into an album. I might still do that – put the new songs under one roof. But for now, it’s a trickle of music. The latest is this one – Wander With Grace.

Peace (and melody),

Music: Voices Lost On The Winter Wind

The other day, I was working on two new song tracks and decided to take a break from those to record this instrumental piece. I composed it on my guitar, trying to emulate an open tuning sound (even though I was not in open tuning) and then I thought it might be interesting to add some saxophone as a melody line. Before I knew it, the pieces were coming together. The hardest part was coming up with a title (my first attempt was to get my dog’s name into the title — Rayna Dreams Of Rabbits — for the moments when she is all twitchy in sleep) but then as I was shoveling, some neighbors were walking by and we tried to talk but the winter wind was too much so we just waved.

Thus, the title of this piece: Voices Lost On The Winter Wind.

Song Lyric Art

Song Lyrics Art

I’ve written before about my song lyric sheets, and the mess they show of my mind in the midst of revision process. I took a pic of a brand new song I am composing and filtered it a bit. It’s neat (as a piece of art) but not neat (as a piece of writing).

Music Remix: Gift Of Peace

A number of years ago, my friend and I wrote and recorded a holiday song — A Gift of Peace — and my son produced a video for it (which just reached 1,000 views) and in the past few years, I have tried to do small remixes of the song, just to stay connected to the project and to give a music gift to my friend, John. The video above is this year’s remix.

I’ve been keeping all of the remixes in a YouTube play list.

Here is the original song and video:

I like this remix, where I slightly changed the song and asked two of my friends — Greg and Bob — to play along with me, live.

Peace (it’s a gift),
Kevin

Daily Create: Imperfect, Unfinished Things

Songwriting Workspace

The prompt for the DS106 Daily Create was about acknowledging the”messy piles of imperfect things” and I had in mind my songwriting space, as messy as a place in my house and in my mind as one could imagine. I really enjoyed the text that accompanied the prompt — of Sarah Leavitt’s post about a presentation she gave about creativity and persistence.

This art was filtered from a photograph of my songwriting workspace.

Peace (finding art in the chaos),
Kevin

Music: Dangerous Girl

This is a new song that I wrote and recorded, inspired by my wife and other strong women in my life. I was hoping to capture the spirit and independence of these women.
