Daily Create: A Story Of Arrival

The prompt for this morning’s DS106 Daily Create has to do with inventing your own origin story. I used my dad’s career as a drummer for mine.

So the family story goes that my father, a professional drummer by trade, was in the basement, playing along to the Bruce Channel song “Hey Baby” when he kicked the bass drum a little bit too hard on the downbeat, felt his drum set shudder, and then thought the entire drum head had exploded, only to find a baby (me) sprawled out on the ground, harmonizing in an infant warble to the chorus of the song. I don’t believe it, either. I never could sing.

And now a funny real story: When my first son was about to be born, I was playing a live gig with my band at the time — at a bar, three towns away — when the pager (!!) that the hospital had given my wife and myself went off on my belt, as my wife was signaling to me it was time to get my butt home, for the baby was on its way. The pager went off in the middle of a song, and (the band knew this was possible) I quickly packed my sax and scrambled out of the bar. Behind me, my band-mates kicked into a cover of the song “Hey Baby” and I will always remember that night as the “Hey Baby” night.

Peace (hit the high hats),
Kevin
